How much in advance do you really start planning a wedding?

My husband, and I want to have a big vow-renewal ceremony (wedding), and we’ve been saving up for a while, and decided on Fall 2010. How early do couples typically start REALLY planning for their wedding? We had a ceremony before, but MIL took over everything so I am clueless. Thanks.

couples typically start planning a year in advance. it helps to make sure you’re not running around like a chicken with it’s head cut off at the last minute.
im starting properly planning now and we’re getting married this september ish
it really is all up to you. if you want to get some of it out of the way then do it. gives you less to do later when the day is closer. i started planning a year before. if you have that photographer that you just dreamed of having then get him now so he/she does not get booked up.
When we got married we got engaged in June & was married in April of the following year. I started planning right away.
We started planning a week after we got engaged, since we wanted to be married in a year. Since you know approximately when you want to get married next year, why not start booking things now, like your reception site?
Usually it’s a year in advance.
Here is a website with a checklist on what to do each month.

My fiancé proposed to me 2 weeks ago and we are planning to have our wedding same as you, August 2010, while putting a portion of our checks in savings every month. We are just really excited though, so we have been checking out different places. Our main goal now is to find a place and book a date. The rest of the planning will probably start this coming summer, when it’s about a year until the wedding.
